How the Full Moon Affects Us – Mind, Body, and Spirit
There’s something undeniably magnetic about a full moon. Whether it’s the soft glow lighting up the night sky or the way it seems to stir something deep within us, full moons have captured human attention for centuries. But beyond folklore and superstition, could there actually be a link between the full moon and our well-being?
Many ancient cultures believed the moon influenced emotions, sleep, and even behavior. And while modern science tends to be cautious in confirming these beliefs, some recent research suggests the full moon might affect us more than we think.
1. Sleep Patterns and Mood Shifts
One of the most well-documented effects of the full moon is its potential impact on sleep. A 2013 study published in Current Biology found that participants experienced lower sleep quality around the time of a full moon — taking longer to fall asleep, sleeping less deeply, and losing about 20 minutes of sleep on average each night. While the exact reason is still unclear, researchers speculate that our internal biological rhythms might be subtly synced with lunar phases. [1]
Less sleep, as many of us know, doesn’t just make us tired — it affects mood, focus, and overall emotional resilience. So if you find yourself feeling a bit more on edge or introspective during a full moon, it might not be all in your head.
2. Time for Reflection and Release
In many wellness practices — from yoga to astrology — the full moon is seen as a time of culmination. It’s a phase of heightened energy, ideal for releasing what no longer serves us and reflecting on what we’ve grown through. Some people use this time for journaling, moonlight meditation, or simply slowing down and tuning in.
This emotional and spiritual connection may not have hard science behind it, but the act of creating intentional space during a full moon can be profoundly grounding. As wellness coach and author Sahara Rose puts it, “The full moon illuminates not only the sky, but also the things within us that are ready to be seen and released.” [2]
A Gentle Reminder
Whether or not you believe the moon holds sway over your sleep or emotions, there’s value in aligning with natural rhythms. The full moon can be a gentle reminder to pause, look inward, and reconnect with yourself — and that’s always good for your wellness.
