Mahjong Is Having a Moment — And We’re Here for It

There’s something special about gathering around a table.

You sit down with four people, a beautiful set of tiles, a little strategy, and no real idea where the afternoon will take you. Before long, you’re laughing, learning, talking, and probably saying, “Wait… whose turn is it?”

That’s the magic of Mahjong.

And now, Mahjong has officially found a home at The Denver Village.

More Than a Game

American Mahjong is a game of strategy, skill, luck, and a little bit of patience. But ask anyone who loves playing and they’ll probably tell you that the game itself is only part of the reason they keep coming back.

It’s the people.

Mahjong gives us a reason to put our phones down, step away from the busy parts of life, and sit across from one another. It creates space for conversation, laughter, friendly competition, and the kind of connection that can be harder to find as adults.

At The Denver Village, that’s exactly what we love about it.

We believe wellness isn't just about what happens on a yoga mat or during a sound bath. Community is wellness, too. Sometimes taking care of yourself looks like learning something new, meeting someone you wouldn’t have otherwise met, and spending a few hours around a table with good people.

Why Mahjong Is the Perfect Village Activity

Mahjong checks a lot of boxes.

It gets you off your phone.
In a world where so much of our social interaction happens through screens, there’s something wonderfully old-fashioned about sitting around a table and actually being together.

It keeps your brain engaged.
Mahjong combines memory, strategy, pattern recognition, decision-making, and a healthy dose of adaptability. You’re constantly paying attention to what’s happening on the table.

It gives you something to do together.
Sometimes connecting feels easier when there’s an activity involved. Mahjong gives everyone a shared experience—and plenty to talk about along the way.

It welcomes beginners.
You don’t have to be an expert to start. In fact, learning something new with other people can be one of the best ways to build connection.

And, honestly, it’s just fun.

There’s the satisfying sound of the tiles. The excitement when you’re close to completing a hand. The inevitable moments of confusion. The little celebrations when someone wins.

It’s a whole experience.

Mahjong at The Denver Village

We created our Mahjong series to be more than a place to play. We want it to feel like a place to belong.

Whether you're brand new to American Mahjong, recently learned the basics, or already love the game, there’s a place for you at the Village.

Mahjong 101: First Flight

Never played before? Start here.

Our beginner-friendly Mahjong 101 class introduces you to the fundamentals of American Mahjong, including the tiles, rules, game setup, strategy card, turn flow, and Charleston.

It’s designed for a group of four friends, making it a fun way to learn something new together.

Mahjong 102: Taking Flight

Ready to build on the basics?

Mahjong 102 is designed for players who understand the fundamentals and want to become more comfortable at the table. You’ll reinforce what you’ve learned while beginning to explore strategy, defensive play, and practical gameplay tips.

Guided Play: Spread Your Wings

Sometimes you know how to play—but still find yourself thinking, Wait… what do I do now?

Guided Play gives you the opportunity to play real games while a Mahjong teacher provides coaching and encouragement along the way.

It’s a natural next step between learning the rules and feeling confident playing on your own.

Open Play at The Denver Village

Once you know the basics, come pull up a seat.

Tile Me Thursdays happen every week, and Sunday Tile Social is offered twice a month. These relaxed open-play gatherings are about playing, practicing, meeting people, and enjoying the game.

Come with a friend or come solo. We’ll provide the tiles and everything you need to play—you just bring your Mahjong card and yourself.

You Don't Have to Know Anyone to Come

This might be our favorite part.

You don’t need an established Mahjong group. You don’t need to know four people who already play. And you certainly don’t need to have everything figured out before you walk through the door.

You can come by yourself, pull up a seat, and meet people along the way.

Because creating community doesn’t always happen by accident. Sometimes, we just need a place that makes it easier to show up.

That’s what we hope Mahjong becomes at The Denver Village: a reason to get together, a place to meet new people, and another way to feel a little more connected.

Come Play Mahj With Us

The Denver Village is a wellness collective in the Denver/Aurora community built around a simple idea: you don't have to navigate life alone.

We bring people together through movement, wellness, workshops, events, practitioners—and now, Mahjong.

Because sometimes wellness looks like slowing down.

Sometimes it looks like trying something new.

And sometimes, it looks like sitting around a table with a handful of tiles, laughing with people you just met, and realizing you’ve found your people.

Come play Mahj with us. We’ll save you a seat.
